さて、今日の単語は syllogistic 。
形容詞では三段論法の、また巧妙な、もっともらしい、
名詞では演繹法、また巧妙なもっともらしい論法、という意味です。

三段論法とは、大前提、小前提、結論から構成される、
演繹法の一形態という意味だそうです。

この語は、中期英語、フランス語、ラテン語を経由し、
ギリシア語で to syllogize の意味の syllogizesthai を語源に持ちます。
この syllogizesthai の語源は、
to collect, speak の意味のインド-ヨーロッパ語族の語根 leg- です。
leg- はこの他、 lexicon や lecture、select の語源でもあるそうです。

I tried to find Him on the Christian cross, but He was not there; I went to the temple of the Hindus and to the old pagodas, but I could not find a trace of Him anywhere.
