権利や借りなどを強く主張するのを控えること、
また我慢、忍耐、自制、寛大さ、という意味です。

この単語は forbear が元で、
これは古期英語で to endure の意味の forberan から。
さらにこの語源は away の意味の for- と、to bear の意味の beran です。
