戦争やストライキ等、契約の履行が免除されるような予見・抑制不可能な出来事、
また不可抗力という意味です。

これはフランス語からの単語で、文字通り superior force という意味です。
関連語にラテン語由来の vis major という単語があり、
これは今回の単語と同様、洪水や地震などの免責事項を指します。
